I still swear I remember a laptop being in this game. Either I'm crazy or I was playing another version, if there was one.

You'd carry the laptop as an item and monsters would drop disks occassionally. The disks would have programs on them, and once you loaded the disk into the laptop it was saved and the disk item itself disappeared. The different programs would do things like act as a built in transmitter or galacticom, or even a trikorder... and I remember it storing the usual information about gameplay (also found in the complex and in bases). And I think a lot of the disks were mystery disks... the program did something but it didn't really come into play until later.

Anyway, the laptop was a way of having a lot of functions available to you without taking up equipment slots.

What the hell was I playing? Does this sound like another door game that could be mixed up with OOII?

Well, the closest thing in UT2004 is the AFB.  You need access cards to get into it, and you if you make it down to the lab you can get upgrades like a built-in galaticom, or trikorder....I think you need a floppy disk to access the missile silos though.

As for a "laptop" in a game, I can't say off the top of my head.  I only played a few door games though, have you tried the BBS game on bbs.operationoverkill.com?

The "laptop" you are thinking of was in a very similiar game (a knock-off, I think) called "Land of Devistation".

It had essentially the same plot, and it had a cool GUI term you could download.  It had some good unique features (like you could clone yourself, etc), but it didn't at all match the realism and game play of OOII (IMHO).
